Quality of Seed Corn
We have sold out of 2013 seed corn. I'm sorry for the inconvenience. Drought in 2012 was tough on yield. I'll plant more this season, and hopefully, we'll have much more seed to sell in 2014.
Abbe Hills OP is sold in one bushel bags. It is cleaned and graded, and germination tested at the Seed Lab at Iowa State University in January of the year it is to be sold.
The large seeds this year are quite dense while smaller seeds from the tips and butts of the ears are much lighter. This difference in weight accounts for the big differences in number of kernels per bushel. Remember that not every seed will germinate (for example, 91% germination), so you will need to overplant somewhat (at least by 9%) to get the final plant density that you want.
The seed sizes, minimum kernel counts, and germination percents for 2013 seed are:
Seed size Kernels per bushel % Germination
Large flat 85,000 95%
Large round 74,000 93%
Large plateless 74,000 94%
Medium plateless 105,000 95%
